AvonAvon Glazewear Lipstick($8)

Why we love it: A high-performance gloss and luxury lip color in one with a smooth, moisturizing yet non-slippery texture and a non-sticky, glossy finish.  Find it!

What we said: Essentially it’s a lip gloss in lipstick form that comes in a riveting range of sheer colors. These last longer than a standard lip gloss, so frequent touch-ups aren’t necessary. This isn’t a foolproof product for anyone prone to lip color bleeding into lines around the mouth, but it is a must-try if you love the high shine many lip glosses provide but dislike their brevity.

BeneFit 10($26)

Why we love it: One of the better pressed shimmer powders around due to its colors and finish on skin. The shine does not flake.  Find it!

What we said: This pressed shimmer powder is housed in a large cardboard box and includes a pale pink and sheer bronze shade with no divider in between. The concept is that you bronze and highlight, but this is best for highlighting by adding soft touches of shine because the bronze shade is so sheer. The shine clings well and is glow-y without being too show-y, making for an attractive, though pricey, evening look.

Boots No7 Soft & Sheer Tinted Moisturiser SPF 15 ($11.99)

Why we love it: Creamy-smooth texture applies and blends beautifully, providing sheer coverage and a fresh, moist finish; In-part titanium dioxide sunscreen provides sufficient UVA protection.  Find it!

What we said: This is a great find for normal to dry skin, and all of the shades are recommended.

BootsBoots No7 Stay Perfect Foundation SPF 15 ($15.99)

Why we love it: Feels nearly weightless, and sets to a smooth matte finish while providing sheer to light coverage and sun protection from a blend of actives that includes titanium dioxide.  Find it!

What we said: This makes reference to the skin-strengthening ceramides it contains, but the amount of them in this silky liquid foundation is barely a dusting. Although this isn’t skin care disguised as makeup, it is still a terrific foundation. The overall formula is best for normal to very oily skin. Among the eight mostly great, neutral shades, the only one to avoid (due to its orange tone) is Truffle.

Boots No7 Perfect Light Loose Powder ($12.99)

Why we love it: Feather-light texture and a seamless, dry finish that’s absorbent enough for even very oily skin.

What we said: The aluminum starch– and talc-based formula is excellent for normal to oily skin because it absorbs well without looking chalky or thick. Although Boots advertises four shades on their Web site, the Target stores I visited consistently sold only two, both of which are sheer and recommended. Bonus points are deserved because the packaging for this loose powder works great to minimize mess.

Boots No7 Perfect Light Portable Loose Powder ($12.99)

Why we love it: Loose powder to go, without the mess! Powder is dispensed onto soft, well-shaped brush for quick touch-ups.

What we said: This has the same formula and review as the No7 Perfect Light Loose Powder above, except this comes in a portable container that includes a built-in brush. Powder is dispensed onto the brush, and the brush itself is quite nice; although not incredibly dense, it’s soft and shaped well for its intended purpose.

Boots No7 Sheer Temptation Lipstick ($9.99)

Why we love it: Rich, emollient feel with a glossy finish yet isn’t too slippery, and the colors are great. Definitely one of the best sheer lipsticks at mass market stores.  Find it!

What we said: Although the colors look quite bold in the tube, each goes on sheer, as the name states.

Boots Botanics Lip Gloss ($8.99)

Why we love it: Superior smooth texture that moisturizes without feeling goopy.  Find it!

What we said: This provides a beautiful selection of sheer to moderate colors, each with a sexy gloss finish and subtle shimmer.

Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara ($27.50)

Why we love it: The rubber-bristled brush quickly thickens and lengthens lashes for outstanding definition without clumps. It wears without flaking or smearing, and is very waterproof.

What we said: This impresses in every respect, which it should at this price! You will need an oil- or silicone-based remover when it’s time to take this off, but flaking and smudging are not a problem.

ClarinsClarins Truly Matte Foundation SPF 15($34)

Why we love it: Beautifully silky liquid foundation that provides sun protection solely from titanium dioxide, which helps contribute to its powdery, long-wearing matte finish.  Find it!

What we said: This has an utterly accurate name! It provides light to medium coverage while looking surprisingly skin-like. Someone with very oily skin will be pleased with the application and finish, not to mention the sun protection, because that means you wouldn’t have to layer products. Drawbacks include a strong scent and the fact that the darkest shades tend to look a bit dull due to the amount of titanium dioxide and the dry finish of the silicones. Among the 15 shades (Clarins’ largest selection) are options for fair to dark (but not very dark) skin tones. Most of the shades are very good; the ones to avoid are the slightly peach Ginger, Real Honey, and Hazelnut, the slightly pink Sunlit Beige, and the orange-tinged Nutmeg.
