Why has my favorite skin-care product or makeup color been discontinued?

We apologize if your favorite Paula's Choice skin care or makeup product has been discontinued. The decision to discontinue an item is never done impulsively. Many different factors are taken into account when we choose to discontinue an item, including consumer preferences, the availability of new ingredients, and more advanced formulations. We do realize that customers may want to stock up if their favorites are being discontinued, so we generally make discontinued products and shades available at 25-50% off retail (with no limits on the number you can purchase) on our On Sale page for as long as they are in stock.

When should I discard a Paula's Choice product?

In general, it is best to discard Paula's Choice cosmetics placed near the eyelashes (like mascara) after four to six months of use. The usage time for eye-area cosmetics is more limited than for other products. Because of microbial exposure and the risk of eye infections, some industry experts even recommend replacing mascara every three months because of how close it gets to the cornea and lens of the eye. If your Paula's Choice mascara becomes dry, discard it. Do not add water or saliva to moisten it as that will introduce bacteria into the product. If you have an eye infection, consult a physician immediately, stop using all eye-area cosmetics, and discard those you were using when the infection occurred.

For Paula's Choice skin care products (cleansers, moisturizers, exfoliants, foundations), we recommend discarding twelve months after opening. Products that have developed a strange odor or dramatic texture change should be discarded immediately. But remember, Paula's Choice products do not contain fragrance, so any scent is an inherent characteristic of the ingredients used in the product. Paula's Choice sunscreens, benzoyl peroxide products, and RESIST Skin Lighteners carry expiration dates so you know when the active ingredients are past their prime. This does not mean the product is no longer effective, just that they are likely not as effective (or protective, where sunscreens are concerned) as they once were.

Are Paula's Choice products fragrance-free?

Yes, Paula's Choice products are 100% fragrance free. Any perceived scent is simply from the raw ingredients. No fragrances or potentially irritating masking agents have been added because fragrance-free is what's best for your skin!

Are your products safe to use during pregnancy?

It is always best to consult with your doctor on these issues because he or she is the one who is best qualified to provide advice about your condition.

I have Celiac disease. Which Paula's Choice products contain the wheat or gluten ingredients I should avoid?

The majority of Paula's Choice products are gluten-free; however, the following items do contain wheat and/or gluten:

  • Lip & Body Treatment Balm, Moisturizing Lipscreen SPF 15, and Skin Balancing Moisture Gel all contain wheat germ oil.
  • All Over Hair & Body Shampoo and Moisture Boost Hydrating Treatment Cream contain wheat protein.
  • Smooth Finish Conditioner contains wheat amino acids.
  • Brow/Hair Tint contains wheat protein and oligosacharrides.
  • RESIST Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum contains oat kernel extract. Note: this may be OK for those with Celiac disease—please check with your doctor.
  • Hydralight Moisture Infusing Lotion, Beautiful Body Butter, and RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment with 10% AHA contains oat kernel extract, which is a topical anti-irritant.

Please note: Some with Celiac disease can tolerate a mild amount of wheat or gluten (which would be the case with cosmetics) and topical exposure is different from ingestion. However, Paula's Choice recommends that you always consult with your physician if there is any doubt.

What Paula's Choice skin-care products are appropriate for African-American skin?

All of them! While many women of color feel their skin care needs differ from those of Caucasian women, it turns out that regardless of color or ethnic background, all skin is subject to a range of virtually identical problems with similar considerations. Whether it is dry or oily skin, blemishes, scarring, wrinkles, skin discolorations, rashes, rosacea, sensitivity, or sun damage, the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment is the same for all men and women. For more information, see our article on African-American Skin.

Cleansers

Besides the skin type they're formulated for, what is the difference between the Paula's Choice cleansers? Is one stronger?

Hydralight One Step Face Cleanser is a non-foaming water-based gel cleanser that feels light and refreshing, while being effective for removing makeup, and easy to rinse from the skin.

Skin Balancing Cleanser has a unique, cushiony-soft texture and slight foaming action. It is our most concentrated cleanser, thoroughly removes makeup, and is also easy to rinse.

Moisture Boost One Step Face Cleanser has a lightly foaming silky lotion texture that contains more skin-conditioning agents, so it feels softer on the skin yet still rinses easily and completely removes makeup.

Skin Recovery Cleanser is a creamy cleanser for dry to very dry and/or sensitive skins. It is exceptionally mild and was designed to be extra comfortable (but not greasy) over dry skin, while still rinsing easily and cleansing thoroughly.

RESIST Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser has a lighter, silkier feel designed to work best for dry, sun-damaged skin. What's more, it also serves as the perfect first step in your RESIST skin-care routine, setting you up for younger-looking, healthier skin.

What cleanser should I use if I have an oily t-zone but I am dry around my mouth and cheeks?

We recommend Hydralight One Step Face Cleanser or Skin Balancing Cleanser and then a moisturizer on the dry areas. If you do not see improvement using with either of these cleansers then consider trying Moisture Boost One Step Face Cleanser.

I have oily skin. Which cleanser should I use?

It all depends on personal preference. If you prefer a super-light, clean-rinsing gel cleanser, Hydralight One Step Face Cleanser is ideal. If you prefer a more luxurious cleanser that foams yet rinses completely with no residue, Skin Balancing Cleanser is ideal.

Should I alternate cleansers if my skin is oilier or drier at different times of the year (such as oilier in summer or drier in winter)?

This is generally best. If your skin is oilier in the summer, you may need a more thorough cleanser to remove oil buildup, sunscreen, and makeup. In contrast, because dry, cold weather tends to create dry skin, you may want to switch to a creamier water-soluble cleanser during winter.

Will the cleansers remove all of my makeup?

Yes; however, because it is so important to ensure that all of your eye makeup is removed thoroughly, we strongly suggest using Gentle Touch Makeup Remover before or after cleansing.

Should I use the cleanser once or twice a day?

Twice daily, every day. In the morning you want to remove all of the dead skin cells that have shed overnight, allowing your products to work effectively, and at night you want to remove the makeup, excess oil, and dirt.

How much do I use?

An amount between a nickel to a quarter should be perfect, but you may need more or less depending on personal preference and how much makeup you routinely wear.

Are all of the cleansers pH balanced?

Yes. The pH for the cleansers is between 5.5-6.3, the same as the skin's pH range.

Will the cleansers sting if they get in my eyes?

As is the case when almost any skin-care product gets in your eyes, our cleansers could potentially cause your eyes to sting. It is often not the cleanser itself that causes the stinging, but the cleanser mixed with your makeup. None of our products contain fragrances and known irritants so our cleansers are very gentle and all of them are water-soluble.

Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serums

What do these products do?

The primary purpose of our Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serums is to supply the skin with a selection of effective and potent antioxidants and anti-irritants, and these formulas contain the greatest amount and range of antioxidants of any Paula's Choice product. Each formula delivers the antioxidants into the top layers of skin and helps your skin look and act younger. Research has established that routinely applying antioxidants reduces the effect of environmental aggressors (such as sun exposure, cigarette smoke, auto exhaust, pollution), and helps skin to stay healthy and repair damage.

What are the benefits of antioxidants?

Please see this article from Paula and her team to learn more about the benefits of antioxidants.

How do I use the Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serums?

Regardless of which Paula's Choice Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum you use, here are helpful application guidelines to follow:

  • Apply morning and/or evening after cleansing and/or toning
  • If you're using one of our AHA or BHA exfoliants, apply the exfoliant first (after cleansing and toning)
  • If you're using one of our CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatments, apply after your exfoliant and follow with the Antioxidant Concentrate
  • If you're using one of our RESIST skin lightening products, apply the skin lightener before the Antioxidant Concentrate and your moisturizer
  • If you are using topical prescription products such as Renova, MetroGel, or TriLuma, apply them before using the Antioxidant Concentrate
  • For daytime use, finish your skin-care routine with a moisturizer with SPF 15 or greater
  • For nighttime use, you may apply the Antioxidant Concentrate under your regular moisturizer
  • Any of the Antioxidant Concentrates can and should be used around the eyes

For details on each of the Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serums, click here.

Since Skin Recovery and Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Concentrates both contain retinol, do they increase sensitivity to the sun?

Unlike tretinoin (all trans retinoic acid), retinol does not appear to make skin more sensitive to the sun. Further, research has shown that unprotected skin exposed to UVB radiation loses the vitamin A content that is present in skin. Therefore, as always, we recommend daily application of an effective sunscreen rated SPF 15 or higher.

Since both Skin Recovery and Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Concentrates contain retinol, is it OK to combine them with a product that contains benzoyl peroxide?

Yes, this combination (if needed) is fine. The only caution is to pay attention to your skin's response. If irritation develops, we suggest applying the benzoyl peroxide product in the morning and using one of our Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serums at night. Alternately, you can apply the benzoyl peroxide product where needed, and apply the Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum elsewhere. If you are using a prescription product with tretinoin (Retin-A, Renova, Tazorac, Avita), we recommend applying the benzoyl peroxide separately. Because tretinoin is more potent and less stable than retinol, benzoyl peroxide can render it ineffective when the two active ingredients are combined. Please note: If you are using a prescription product that contains benzoyl peroxide, please consult your physician before making any changes to your skin-care routine.

Since Paula's Choice sunscreens and moisturizers already contain antioxidants, why do I need the Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum?

As research on topical application of antioxidants continues, it is becoming increasingly apparent that what works best is to give the skin generous amounts and a diverse mix of these ingredients. The Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serums contain the greatest amount and variety of antioxidants of any Paula's Choice product. In other words, adding increased levels of antioxidants to your skin-care routine is a very good thing for a multitude of skin care concerns. This is a win-win situation for the health and appearance of your skin!

I use a prescription product with tretinoin (i.e. Retina-A, Renova, Tazorac). Since Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate and Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate contain retinol, is it OK to combine them?

We are not aware of any contraindications surrounding the use of tretinoin and retinol and believe this combination is beneficial to skin. Due to their similarities, retinol has the potential to add to the amount of tretinoin (the active ingredient in prescription products such as Retin-A, Renova, and Tazorac) in the skin. Retinol can be converted to tretinoin in the skin when and if certain enzymes are present. There is a chance that using a product with retinol along with a tretinoin product may increase the side effects of tretinoin therapy, including dry, flaking, or reddened skin. Because this question concerns a prescription drug, we recommend consulting your physician and following his or her advice.

Will the Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serums interfere with any of my other products/medications?

No. These products can be used with any other skin-care product, and are compatible with topical prescription medicines such as MetroLotion, Clindagel, Differin, or hydrocortisone. However, it is always best to check with your physician to be sure your skin-care products are compatible with any medications you may be using.

Why are there color variations in the Super Antioxidants Concentrate Serums

Both our Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum and Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate contain the ingredient astaxanthin. This ingredient is part of the carotenoid family that functions as a potent, powerful antioxidant. Depending on the natural coloration of the raw material, it is possible that this ingredient will impart a light to medium yellow or pale coral hue. This is exactly why many other companies use synthetic coloring agents to cover up the variations. We choose not to do this. This color is completely natural, not visible on skin, and can vary from batch to batch. Therefore, you may notice some tubes of Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant or Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate are almost colorless while others exhibit a hint of yellow or orange. Regardless of the level of color (or lack thereof), these are safe, effective products that promote healthy, radiant, younger-looking skin.

Toners

How do I know which Paula's Choice toner is right for me?

Although every Paula's Choice toner contains a range of ingredients that provide multiple benefits (including anti-aging), and can remove last traces of makeup, each have distinctions that make them preferred for certain skin types or concerns:

Is it OK to use a combination of toners?

Yes, this is perfectly fine, and can provide skin with multiple benefits. If you wish to use more than one of our toners, we recommend applying one in the morning and the other in the evening.

Should I use a toner in the morning and evening?

Ideally, yes. Paula's Choice toners offer benefits your skin needs day and night.

Can I use a toner to remove lipstick and eye makeup?

No. Toners work best for removing last traces of foundation or powder from along your hairline or jaw area. Use Gentle Touch Makeup Remover and/or one of our facial cleansers to remove makeup.

Exfoliants, AHA vs. BHA & RESIST Smoothing/Resurfacing Products

What's the difference between BHA and AHA?

BHA is oil-soluble and can penetrate into the pore lining to exfoliate built-up skin cells that clog pores and lead to breakouts. BHA also exfoliates on the surface of skin as well, and will help fade discolorations. It is best for skin types prone to blackheads and blemishes, or those with very sensitive skin.

AHAs are water-soluble and exfoliate primarily on the surface of the skin. They are generally best for sun-damaged, uneven skin that is not prone to blemishes. AHA's also have moisturizing properties.

What are the pH levels for Paula's Choice AHA and the BHA products?

Every Paula's Choice exfoliant is formulated within a pH range that guarantees efficacy. This range is generally from 3.5-3.8.

How does the RESIST Daily Smoothing Treatment with 5% AHA differ from the 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Gel?

Although both of these products are AHA exfoliants, the texture and overall formulas differ. RESIST Daily Smoothing Treatment is an advanced AHA lotion that contains 5% glycolic acid, anti-inflammatory agents, and numerous anti-aging ingredients designed to improve wrinkles. The 8% AHA Gel contains 8% glycolic acid formulated in a silky gel base with soothing agents and antioxidants. Both are excellent products but RESIST Daily Smoothing Treatment offers additional benefits that go beyond what our 8% AHA Gel does, especially if wrinkles are a chief concern.

How should I alternate using RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment 10% AHA with RESIST Daily Smoothing Treatment 5% AHA?

RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment is recommended for use at night, at least once but up to 4 or 5 times per week. Since we do not advise using other exfoliants at the same time as RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment, you can apply RESIST Daily Smoothing Treatment as part of your morning skin-care routine or on nights you do not apply the Weekly Resurfacing Treatment. In the morning, RESIST Daily Smoothing Treatment should be applied after cleansing and toning. Follow with a serum and/or moisturizer or foundation rated SPF 15 or greater.

Is it OK to alternate the RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment 10% AHA with my BHA exfoliant?

Yes, if you are also concerned with clogged pores and blemishes, you may apply your BHA exfoliant in the morning or on nights you do not use the RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment. In the morning, your BHA exfoliant should be applied after cleansing and toning. Follow with a serum and/or moisturizer or foundation rated SPF 15 or greater.

Is it OK to use RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment more than 2–3 times per week?

Yes, but we do not recommend doing so until you've seen how your skin responds to this treatment. Overuse may not provide better results; most people will find using this at night either once a week or up to 2 or 3 times per week produces great results, and you can use another Paula's Choice exfoliant on other nights. If you have advanced sun damage 4 or 5 times week may be extremely beneficial

What if my skin experiences a stinging or tingling sensation from RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment?

Upon application to cleansed, toned skin, some people may experience a small amount of tingling or feel a stinging sensation. This is normal and it should dissipate quickly and stop with ongoing use. If the tingling or stinging sensation does not stop or worsens, or if your skin becomes red or feels like it's burning, immediately rinse RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment with plain water and gently pat dry. Should this occur, ongoing use is not recommended.

Your AHA products (glycolic acid) have a higher percentage than your BHA products (salicylic acid). Does this mean they are stronger exfoliants?

The difference in concentrations between AHAs and BHA is not a qualitative one. AHAs are not more effective or better than BHA because of the increased concentration needed for one versus the other. Rather, AHAs are most effective at 5% to 10% and BHA at 1% to 2%.

What's the difference between the various 1% and 2% BHA products?

The main differences are the amount of the active ingredient (salicylic acid) and the texture of each product. The BHA products with 1% salicylic acid are best for mild to moderate breakouts and blackheads. Those with 2% salicylic acid are best for moderate to severe breakouts or stubborn blackheads.

1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion has a light lotion base that dries to a matte finish. It can be used by all skin types.

2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion is in a creamier base that still feels light on the skin yet also moisturizes. These are best for normal to dry or combination skin types with mild to moderate breakouts and/or stubborn blackheads.

1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel and 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel are water-based formulas with a silky finish. They are best for those with normal to oily or combination skin prone to blemishes and blackheads. If you have moderate to severe acne and/or stubborn blackheads, the 2% strength is preferred.

Both of the BHA Gels absorb quickly, but if you apply too much, they may leave a slightly tacky feel on skin—this sensation will disappear once you apply your next product (i.e. serum, daytime moisturizer with SPF 15+ or nighttime moisturizer.)

2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Liquid is a clear liquid that contains a slip agent to enhance the penetration of the salicylic acid, while keeping skin soft and smooth. It is best for someone with normal or oily skin with stubborn breakouts or blackheads. Note that applying too much may leave a slight tacky feel on skin, but this will vanish with the application of your next product (i.e. serum, daytime moisturizer with SPF 15+ or nighttime moisturizer.)

Which BHA should I use?

We invite you to view the video here to learn which BHA exfoliant is best for you.

I use one of your BHA products and have noticed some of my towels and/or pillowcases have become stained, almost as if they were bleached. Why does this happen?

When salicylic acid is formulated with a lower pH range (between 3-4), which is essential for it to work effectively as an exfoliant, there is a very small risk it may have a lightening effect on dyed natural fabrics such as cotton or linen in necklines of shirts or pillowcases. You can easily eliminate this potential problem by waiting for the BHA product to absorb and dry completely before coming into contact with such dyed fabrics.

Can I use both an AHA and a BHA?

You can use both, but generally using one or the other is far more typical, as both BHA and AHA are excellent options for exfoliation of the surface of skin. We do not recommend using both on the same parts of the face at the same time. For best results, alternate use either by day or by applying one type of exfoliant in the morning and the other in the evening.

How soon can I expect to see results?

It depends on your skin type and how often you use the product. Results can appear as soon as overnight but may take up to 1 week. For the CLEAR Anti-Acne systems, the time needed to see results will vary depending on the severity of your acne.

I have dry, sun damaged skin AND breakouts in my t-zone—which should I use, an AHA or BHA product?

AHA is better for exfoliating sun-damaged surface skin and BHA is better at getting into the pores and exfoliating the accumulated skin cells that clog pores. Alternating a BHA formula for dry skin with the RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment 10% AHA is an effective option—experiment to see what works best for your skin type.

How often should exfoliants be used?

It depends on your skin and how it reacts to an AHA or BHA product. Once per day may be best, or you may find greater results from using it twice per day (this is what we recommend as part of your Essential or Advanced Skin-Care routines). Those with sensitive skin may do best with applying it once every other day.

After I apply an exfoliant, do I have to wait before applying moisturizer?

No, a moisturizer can be applied to dry areas immediately afterwards.

What do I do when my skin "gets used to" my AHA/BHA?

Your skin doesn't "get used to" an AHA or BHA, but AHAs and BHA do have a drop-off point, because there is only so much surface exfoliation or exfoliation in the pore that can take place. The longer you use these products, the less "dramatic" the results will be. However, they will always be beneficial for maintaining smooth, even-textured skin and encouraging ongoing healthy cell turnover.

Can Paula's Choice AHA or BHA products be used around the eyes?

Yes, but do not apply the AHA or BHA products too close to the eyes or to the eyelid or underbrow areas. You may try a small amount in the general under-eye area (going no closer to the eye than the orbital bone) to see how your skin reacts. If your skin seems fine, then gently pat the AHA or BHA closer to the eye, making sure not to get it too close or in the eye.

Should I use an AHA or BHA on my face and neck?

You can and should use this on your neck or chest if that area is sun damaged and/or has breakouts.

Can BHA be used on teens and/or pre-teens?

Yes, this is fine and often beneficial for teens, especially those with acne or blackheads.

Can I use AHA and/or BHA products on areas other than my face?

Paula's Choice AHA and BHA products can be used anywhere on the body. They work very well to exfoliate dry elbows, knees, feet, and arms. However, if you prefer a product formulated specifically for the body, try our Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% Alpha Hydroxy Acid or Weightless Body Treatment with 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid.

Can the AHA and/or BHA products be used during pregnancy or while lactating?

Although topical exfoliants should not pose a problem for pregnant or lactating women, we recommend asking your doctor before using or continuing to use an AHA or BHA product while pregnant or if you are lactating.

Do I have to use sunscreen if I am using an AHA or BHA product?

Yes. Since these topical exfoliants work to remove layers of sun-damaged skin, it is vitally important that the fresh, new skin is well-protected from UV light. Ironically, the sun-damaged layer of skin (which the AHA or BHA products nicely remove) serves as your skin's first line of defense against sun exposure. Think of it as a callus that offers minimal protection while keeping your skin from looking and feeling its best.

Sunscreens

SPF 15 Sunscreens/Daytime Moisturizers with Sunscreen

I stay out of the sun. Do I still need to use sunscreen?

Yes. UVA rays can penetrate the windows in your office, home, and car, so you should always wear at least an SPF 15 with titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, avobenzone, ecamsule (Mexoryl SX), or Tinosorb as the active ingredients.

What are the differences between Paula's Choice SPF 15 sunscreens?

The main difference between each formula is texture, how it feels on the skin, and the skin type the formula is most suitable for. All of Paula's Choice sunscreens provide UVA/UVB (broad-spectrum) sun protection.

Essential Non-Greasy Sunscreen SPF 15 is best for normal to oily/combination skin, and contains a blend of sunscreens including avobenzone for sufficient UVA protection. This sunscreen has a very light lotion texture that leaves normal to oily/combination skin smooth and protected without feeling slick or greasy. This product can be used on the face or body.

Pure Mineral Sunscreen SPF 15 is best for normal to very dry or sensitive skin, and does not contain synthetic sunscreens such as octinoxate, octisalate, or avobenzone. Although synthetic sunscreens are effective and work beautifully for most skin types, they can be too irritating for sensitive skin, causing stinging or burning, especially when used around the eyes. Pure Mineral Sunscreen contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, inert minerals that are considered non-irritating and a great option for sensitive (but typically not breakout-prone) skin. Pure Mineral Sunscreen has a light, fluid texture that leaves skin feeling silky, soothed, and protected. It is also excellent for use on children and infants over six months of age. This product can be used on the face or body. This sunscreen is also excellent for those struggling with rosacea.

Skin Balancing Daily Mattifying Lotion SPF 15 is a facial moisturizer with sunscreen designed for normal to oily/combination skin. It has an elegant texture with a weightless, shine-free finish to keep oily areas matte and looking fresh for hours. This silky moisturizer contains potent antioxidants and cell-communicating ingredient for anti-aging benefits with excellent daily sun protection.

Skin Recovery Daily Moisturizing Lotion SPF 15 is a facial moisturizer with sunscreen designed for normal to very dry skin. It is creamy yet light-textured and provides broad-spectrum sun protection with mineral actives of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. The silky application sets to a satin matte finish that works beautifully under makeup. Skin is treated to anti-aging ingredients like antioxidants, cell-communicating ingredients, and soothing agents. It is specifically designed for facial application and an excellent daytime moisturizer for those dealing with rosacea.

Will an SPF 15 give me enough protection?

Unless you are in full sun all day long, you should be fine with an SPF 15 sunscreen. If you live in the southern half of the United States, or any other sunny climate, you might want to apply a sunscreen with SPF 30 instead.

Can I use the SPF 15 sunscreens around my eyes?

Yes, but use caution, because anything used around the eyes can migrate into the eyes.

Is it okay to use the SPF 15 sunscreens on babies and children?

Anytime you use an over-the-counter drug on a baby or child you should get your doctor's approval. Many pediatricians recommend keeping infants under six months old out of the sun and making sure that their delicate skin is completely covered. This has to do with their immune system not being fully developed yet, rather than the sunscreen actives themselves.

What about the RESIST Cellular Defense Moisturizer SPF 25? How does it differ from Skin Recovery Daily Moisturizing Lotion SPF 15?

Although both products provide reliable broad-spectrum sun protection, RESIST Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer SPF 25 offers a greater amount of sun protection. The RESIST formula contains titanium dioxide as its active ingredient while Skin Recovery Daily Moisturizing Lotion contains a blend of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Both formulas contain antioxidants to help defend skin against signs of aging, but each has its own blend.

Both provide hydration and a silky, radiant finish those with normal to dry skin will appreciate best.

Is RESIST Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer SPF 25 the only Paula's Choice moisturizer with sunscreen that provides anti-aging benefits?

Definitely not! Every Paula's Choice daytime moisturizer with sunscreens as well as our "body" sunscreens (which can also be applied to the face) provide broad-spectrum sun protection and contain antioxidants for enhanced defense and anti-aging benefits. RESIST Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer SPF 25 contains an antioxidant blend that complements the other RESIST products from Paula's Choice, including the Daily Smoothing Treatment and Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum.

What if I need to reapply sunscreen but do not want to disturb my foundation/makeup?

Try using a pressed powder that contains a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Our Healthy Finish Pressed Powder SPF 15 is an excellent option.

SPF 30 of Greater Sunscreens

You have several sunscreens that offer significant sun protection. Which one should I choose?

You have several sunscreens that offer significant sun protection. Which one should I choose?

All of these sunscreens provide UVA/UVB broad-spectrum sun protection. The SPF 45 is very water-resistant (maintains its protection in water for 80 minutes), while Extra Care Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 30 is water-resistant (maintains its protection in water for 40 minutes). Ultra Light Weightless Finish SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray has not been tested for water-resistance (though based on its formula, it stays on quite well during submersion in water). Keep in mind that whether a sunscreen is labeled water-resistant or not, routine reapplication is necessary to maintain protection.

Is Ultra-Light Weightless Finish SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray suitable for blemish-prone skin?

Yes. This water-light, spray-on sunscreen does not contain thickening agents and its active ingredients are less likely to trigger or exacerbate blemishes. Although it is impossible to state with 100% certainty that someone will not break out from a sunscreen, the texture and finish of Ultra-Light Weightless Finish SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray is highly unlikely to cause such problems. Oftentimes what causes breakouts from sunscreens is either the occlusive active ingredients or thickening agents used to suspend them and create the product's texture.

Moisturizers

My skin is normal, without any really oily or dry areas. Which moisturizer should I use?

We recommend starting with a lighter formula such as Skin Balancing Moisture Gel or Hydralight Moisture-Infusing Lotion. If you want more substantial moisturizing, try RESIST Barrier Repair Moisturizer, or Moisture Boost Hydrating Treatment Cream.

I have normal to oily skin with dry patches. What moisturizer should I use?

Hydralight Moisture-Infusing Lotion and Skin Balancing Moisture Gel are excellent options, as is RESIST Barrier Repair Moisturizer. If the eye area is dry, consider a more emollient formula such as Moisture Boost Hydrating Treatment Cream or Skin Recovery Moisturizer.

I have mostly normal skin with dry areas, especially on my cheeks. Which moisturizer will work best for me?

We recommend starting with Moisture Boost Hydrating Treatment Cream. If your dry areas still do not improve, then try Skin Recovery Moisturizer. It is OK to only put moisturizer on the dry areas and not your entire face.

If you are using anti-acne products (including Retin-A), your skin is oily to very oily skin and you are experiencing surface dryness, try a combination of Skin Balancing Toner followed by Skin Balancing Moisture Gel.

My skin is dry. Which moisturizer do you recommend?

Start with RESIST Barrier Repair Moisturizer. If you want a richer texture, try Moisture Boost Hydrating Treatment Cream or Skin Recovery Moisturizer. It is also helpful to use RESIST Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum or Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Serum in combination with any moisturizer you apply.

I have very dry skin. Which moisturizer should I use?

Skin Recovery Moisturizer is designed for very dry skin and is gentle, very creamy, and rich. It is also helpful to use Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Serum in combination with any moisturizer you apply. You may also try adding a bit of our Beautiful Body Butter to the Skin Recovery Moisturizer for even more intensive moisture and antioxidants.

What is the difference between the Hydralight Moisture-Infusing Lotion and Skin Balancing Moisture Gel?

Texture and how they feel on the skin. Hydralight Moisture-Infusing Lotionn leaves a satiny finish, while Skin Balancing Moisture Gel's weightless silicone base leaves a silky matte finish, and is a better choice if you need light moisturizing and anti-aging ingredients but don't want any after-feel.

Can I apply my moisturizer with sunscreen at night, too?

We don't recommend wearing any moisturizers with sunscreen at night because the actives aren't needed in the evening and provide no other benefit for skin. Instead, try one of our facial moisturizers without sunscreen paired with one of our Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serums.

My skin is really sensitive. Do you have a moisturizer for me?

Since none of Paula's Choice moisturizers contain fragrance, coloring agents, or sensitizing plant extracts, they are all extremely gentle options for your sensitive skin.

Do any of your moisturizers work as a night cream or eye cream? Why don't you offer a moisturizer made specifically for the eyes?

Yes. All of our moisturizers and Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serums are great for use at night and for use around the eyes. If you prefer a thicker, creamier texture to apply at night, Skin Recovery Moisturizer is ideal.

Eye creams are a whim of the cosmetics industry designed to evoke the sale of two products when only one is needed. There is no evidence, research, or documentation validating the claim that eye creams have special formulations setting them apart from other facial moisturizers-the only difference is price and the tiny containers the eye creams come in.

I want a moisturizer with anti-aging benefits. Is RESIST the only option?

No. Every Paula's Choice moisturizer contains the type of ingredients current research considers to be anti-aging: skin-repairing and cell-communicating ingredients along with plenty of antioxidants. The RESIST range takes the concept of anti-aging further by offering treatment and reparative benefits, but every Paula's Choice moisturizer has anti-aging benefits.

How is RESIST Barrier Repair Moisturizer different from the other Paula's Choice facial moisturizers?

RESIST Barrier Repair Moisturizer is a state-of-the-art formula specifically designed to address the advanced needs of those concerned with wrinkles and signs of aging. It contains more antioxidants, a greater range of emollients (including several ingredients that mimic the structure and function of healthy skin) and higher levels of proven cell-communicating ingredients that work to boost collagen production. Despite the advanced nature of this formula, it bears the formulary hallmarks of every Paula's Choice facial moisturizer. All of them are designed to supply skin with what it needs to look and feel its best.

CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatments with Benzoyl Peroxide

What is the difference between the two CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatments?

The only difference is the amount of benzoyl peroxide each contains. The Regular Strength Acne Fighting Treatment contains 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, a good amount to start with for treating mild breakouts or for those with sensitive, blemish-prone skin. The Extra Strength Acne Fighting Treatment contains 5% benzoyl peroxide, a more potent amount best for stubborn blemishes that have not responded favorably to lower strength disinfectants. Each contains soothing agents to reduce redness and inflammation from acne.

How often should I use either Acne Fighting Treatment?

As often as needed to achieve and maintain results. Some people use it two or three times a week and some use it twice a day. The key is to use them consistently to obtain and maintain results.

How long will it take to see a difference?

It's different for everyone, but give it one month (or one menstrual cycle for women) before you fully assess how well this anti-acne product is working for you.

If I use CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatment more often will my acne go away faster??

Individual responses will vary, so results can differ from person to person. What will happen is that the benzoyl peroxide will help disinfect the area, killing the bacteria that cause pimples.

I use the CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatment every day. Why do I still break out?

Not everyone responds the same to acne treatments. It often takes experimenting to find what works best for your skin. While many people have great success with one of our CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatments, you might need to try prescription-only medications available from your dermatologist.

After I apply the Beta Hydroxy Lotion or Liquid, do I immediately apply the CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatment or do I wait a few minutes for the BHA to be absorbed and then apply the CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatment to my dry (rather than moist) skin?

You can apply either CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatment immediately after the BHA. Salicylic acid (BHA) has been found to start working quite quickly and may actually help the penetration of the benzoyl peroxide product./p>

If oxygen can cause free-radical damage to the skin, and benzoyl (and hydrogen) peroxide work by releasing an oxygen molecule to the skin, do benzoyl peroxide or hydrogen peroxide cause free-radical damage?

While they are both peroxides, current research indicates that benzoyl peroxide probably doesn't create the same (if any) oxidative issues as hydrogen peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is also highly effective in reducing acne lesions. We do not recommend the use of hydrogen peroxide for acne because research shows it has cumulative damaging effects on the skin.

Are the CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatments only a spot treatment or for all over?

You can use it as either a spot treatment over breakouts and problem areas or all over.

Can my child or teenager use the CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatments?

Paula's Choice CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatments are excellent for pre-teens and teens because they are much gentler than almost any other topical antibacterial product on the market. They should also be fine to use on children, but if your child is under 10 years old, we recommend that you consult your child's physician prior to use.

I use one of your CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatments and have noticed some of my towels and/or pillowcases have become stained, almost as if they were bleached. Why does this happen?

Because these products contain peroxide they may bleach hair or dyed fabrics. Apply carefully around hairline and eyebrows and allow product to absorb and dry completely before coming in contact with dyed fabrics. If this is a recurring problem, we recommend switching to white towels and/or bed linens.

Masks

How often should I use a mask?

As often as needed. For very oily or very dry skins, this may mean every day. Experimentation will tell you the frequency of application that works best for your skin.

How long should I leave a Paula's Choice mask on?

Skin Balancing Carbon Mask should be left on at least 5 minutes but can stay on longer (up to 20 minutes) if you have extremely oily skin. Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask should also be left on at least 20 minutes but can stay on as long as overnight.

How often should I use Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask?

It can be used as often as needed; it depends on your skin type and personal preference. Someone with very dry, dehydrated skin should use this mask (or a very emollient moisturizer) once per day, morning or evening, until the dryness has improved.

What is the difference between Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask and Paula's moisturizers for normal to very dry skin?

Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask has a thicker, creamier texture than Paula's Choice facial moisturizers. Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask is meant to be used primarily as a mask (occasionally being left on the skin overnight if you prefer or if your skin needs it), it has a more slippery, emollient feel than these and most other moisturizers.

Lip Products

Can I use the Moisturizing Lipscreen SPF 15 at night?

Yes, although Paula's Choice Lip & Body Treatment Balm is a better option, as there is no need to wear sunscreen at night.

Can I use the Moisturizing Lipscreen SPF 15 under my lipstick?

Yes, this is fine to do.

How often should I use Lip Exfoliant with Micro-beads?

As often as needed.

Is Lip & Body Treatment Balm as multi-purpose as it seems?

Yes. It works brilliantly for dry, chapped lips, helps alleviate dry spots anywhere on the body, and is equally great for men, women, and kids.

Skin Lighteners

How often should I use these products?

At least once per day, and preferably twice per day, after cleansing and toning. If you prefer once-daily application, results may take longer to appear.

How long before I see a difference?

Results become noticeable after 2–3 months of consistent use, provided you are diligent about protecting your skin with a daytime moisturizer with SPF 15 or greater every day.

What is the difference between the RESIST Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel and the RESIST Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion?

The main differences are texture (gel vs. lotion) and the type of exfoliant included in the formula. RESIST Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel was designed with normal to oily skin in mind, so it contains salicylic acid (BHA) because those with normal to oily skin tend to break out and BHA is the preferred exfoliant when blemishes are a concern. RESIST Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion contains glycolic acid, which is ideal for someone with normal to dry skin that has visible sun damage (including sun-induced discolorations) and is not prone to breakouts./p>

Can I use an AHA or BHA in combination with either one of the skin lighteners?

Using an additional exfoliant may not be necessary with either skin lightening product, because both Paula's Choice skin lightening products already contain them. However, if you prefer, you can alternate use of an AHA or BHA with either product. You will need to experiment to see which method works best.

Do the skin lighteners work on acne scars?

No. Unless your skin tone is dark (such as being of African-American descent) acne scars are not related to melanin (the skin's pigment) and that is what the active ingredient (hydroquinone) in these products acts upon. Acne scars (which are usually red marks) are a result of your skin's healing response to blemishes, and are called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Although these spots tend to fade on their own, it can take a year or more for them to completely vanish. Using an effective BHA exfoliant will help speed this process. A dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon can use specialized laser treatments to remove the red marks within 1-3 sessions. Those with dark skin tones can try using one of our skin lighteners to fade these marks because in darker skin, the inflammation triggers excess melanin production. A sunscreen rated SPF 15 or greater must be worn daily, otherwise post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation will take much longer to fade.

Can I use the RESIST Skin Lighteners with a product containing benzoyl peroxide?

For best results, do not use hydroquinone (the active ingredient in our RESIST Skin Lightening Lotion & Gel) and benzoyl peroxide (the active ingredient in our CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatments) at the same time. A temporary dark staining of the skin may occur. If accidentally used together, wash the skin with soap and water to remove the staining.

Do I have to continue using one of these products for the rest of my life? Can I stop once the darkened areas are lightened or gone?

To maintain results you do need to continue using a skin lightening product, though you may be able to decrease frequency of application. Keep in mind that skin lighteners will not work unless combined with the use of an effective sunscreen.

Do I put these just on the spots or all over?

Either method is fine.

Will these lighten my whole face?

No. Although keep in mind that for some darker skin tones products containing hydroquinone may have an opposite effect and cause areas of skin to become darkened. This side effect is rare, but it can happen.

Will the spots eventually come back?

They will come back if you do not practice sun avoidance and sun protection and regularly use a skin lightener.

Your skin lighteners contain hydroquinone as the active ingredient. Isn't that a problem?

Hydroquinone is widely considered the gold standard skin lightening ingredient. However, it has had its share of controversy. Please click here to learn more about hydroquinone

Hair Care

All Over Hair & Body Shampoo

What hair type was All Over Hair & Body Shampoo designed for?

It is designed for use by all hair types, including fine or thin.

Will All Over Hair & Body Shampoo cause buildup?

No. All Over Hair & Body Shampoo does not contain film-forming agents or a high level of conditioning agents so there are no ingredients to build-up on the hair shaft. It rinses easily and completely.

I have a sensitive scalp. Can I use this shampoo?

Yes! Because this product does not contain any fragrance, coloring agents, or irritants such as citrus or peppermint, you should be able to use All Over Hair & Body Shampoo without incident.

Can I use All Over Hair & Body Shampoo to wash my infant and/or child?

Yes, although as a general rule we always recommend asking your pediatrician before using any new product on an infant or child's skin.

Smooth Finish Conditioner

What hair type was Smooth Finish Conditioner designed for?

Smooth Finish Conditioner is designed for use by all hair types, including fine or thin. Keep in mind that the finer your hair texture is, the less conditioner you should use. The same principle hold true for persons with oily scalps, who should only condition the ends of the hair and not the roots.

Can I use Smooth Finish Conditioner to shave my legs?

Yes, although we recommend using Close Comfort Shave Gel for best results. Smooth Finish Conditioner is an option, but does not rinse from skin as well as Close Comfort Shave Gel.

How often should I use Smooth Finish Conditioner?

As often as you like! If you have dry or chemically treated hair, we recommend using it after every shampoo.

How long should I leave Smooth Finish Conditioner on my hair before rinsing it?

If you have normal to fine hair, 1-3 minutes is ideal. Thicker, coarse, or hair past shoulder length should leave it on for at least five minutes, preferably longer.

How much Smooth Finish Conditioner should I use per application?

That depends on your hair length and texture. If you have short hair that is fine or thin, an amount less than the size of a dime should be plenty. Normal hair (not fine or thin but not thick or coarse) should use a nickel-sized amount. Thick, coarse, or curly hair that is also long should use a quarter-size amount or more. Experimentation will tell you which amount is best for your hair's texture and condition.

Can I use Smooth Finish Conditioner as a deep conditioner?

Yes. Simply wash hair, towel dry, and apply a generous amount, working through hair with a comb. Leave on overnight or for several hours and rinse, then style as usual.

Can I use Smooth Finish Conditioner as a leave-in conditioner?

Yes, although we recommend using a very small amount (pea-sized) mixed with a styling product (such as gel or mousse) for extra smoothing and softness.

Body-Care Products

What is the difference between Beautiful Body Butter and the Lip & Body Treatment Balm?

The primary difference is texture. Beautiful Body Butter's soft, creamy texture is like whipped butter. Lip & Body Treatment Balm is extremely thick with a rich, lubricating feel. Both products are excellent for addressing the needs of dry to extremely dehydrated skin such as dry, cracked heels, ragged cuticles, rough elbows or knees. Because Beautiful Body Butter has a lighter finish and is more easily absorbed, it is recommended for larger areas of dry skin or as a spot treatment. Lip & Body Treatment Balm is best as a spot treatment or for chapped lips or small patches of very dry skin.

How does Slip Into Silk Body Lotion differ from the Paula's Choice facial moisturizers?

We combined the skin-beneficial elements of our facial moisturizers to create a multi-purpose, all-over body lotion that gives all skin types what they need to look healthy and radiant and feel soft and remarkably smooth.

I have very dry skin in some areas. Is Slip Into Silk Body Lotion emollient enough for me?

Probably not. For very dry or cracked skin (such as elbows, knees, and heels), we recommend using Beautiful Body Butter, which is considerably more emollient than Slip Into Silk Body Lotion.

Is it OK to use Retin-A or Renova with Slip Into Silk Body Lotion?

Yes, this should be fine. However, we always recommend checking with your physician before use with any prescription medications.

Can I use the Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA on my face?

It depends. If you have used AHA products on your face before with success, you should be able to use the Skin Revealing Body Lotion too. However, if you are new to using AHAs or have previously used lower concentrations (5% and below) you should work up to a 10% concentration gradually. We suggest starting with our RESIST Daily Smoothing Treatment with 5% Alpha Hydroxy Acid and monitoring how your skin responds.

Is it OK to use Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA while using Retin-A or Renova?

It is always best to consult with your physician regarding products to use with prescription medications. Upon the advice of your physician, you can experiment with both options to see which one works best for you.

You may apply the tretinoin product in the evening and apply the Skin Revealing Body Lotion as part of your morning routine, followed by an effective sunscreen rated SPF 15 or higher. You may also apply both at the same time, starting with the AHA body lotion and then applying the tretinoin product. If you experience increased redness, prolonged stinging, or flaking skin, discontinue using Skin Revealing Body Moisturizer over areas where tretinoin is also applied.

Can I use AHA and/or BHA products on areas other than my face?

Paula's Choice AHA and BHA products can be used anywhere on the body, or, if preferred, you may choose our AHA and BHA body lotions for use on the face and body.

How does Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA differ from the other Paula's Choice BHA products?

The primary differences are texture and pH level. The lotion base of Weightless Body Treatment is significantly less emollient than our 2% BHA Lotion and entirely different from our 2% BHA Liquid (which has a toner-like texture) or the BHA Gels. Weightless Body Treatment was specially designed to treat raised red bumps on skin (a condition known as keratosis pilaris).

Can I use Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA on my face?

Yes. In fact, some skin types may prefer the texture of Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA for facial use. If you have normal to slightly dry or slightly oily skin and our 2% BHA Liquid or 2% BHA Lotion were not right for you, the Weightless Body Treatment would be a great compromise.

Is it OK to use Retin-A or Renova with Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA?

It is always best to consult with your physician regarding prescription medications. With your physician's OK, you may certainly experiment with using them at the same time or separately depending on how your skin responds. It is always essential to use an effective sunscreen rated at SPF 15 or higher. If you experience increased redness, sensitivity, or flaking skin, discontinue using the Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA over areas where tretinoin is also applied.

Pumps/Spray Pumps

Do pumps and spray pumps come with the products?

Pumps and spray pumps are sold separately for those who prefer them. The products can be easily used without them. The pumps can be locked for safe, mess-free transport while traveling.

My pump is too long for the bottle. Can I trim it?

Yes, you can cut off the bottom with scissors so that it is short enough to fit the bottle (be careful of the trimmed piece flying in an unexpected direction when cut). Make sure to leave it long enough to touch the bottom (or almost the bottom) of the bottle.

Please Note: Pumps and spray pumps work only with the white bottle exfoliants and cleansers, and are not compatible with other products (i.e. cleansers, exfoliants from RESIST or CLEAR product collections.) The sprayer works best with 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Liquid and Skin Relief Treatment.

My pump is clogged. What should I do?

To keep your pump or spray pump from clogging, occasionally remove it and pump through warm water.
