OK - Expensive$$$ Derma E Scar Gel ($19.95 for 2 ounces). This specialty product is supposed to, surprise, diminish the appearance of scars. It contains the same “active” ingredient used in Mederma, a drugstore product making the same scar-reducing claims. The problem is that this ingredient (onion bulb extract) hasn’t been shown to work any better on scars than plain Vaseline and there is no convincing research proving it does much of anything (Sources: Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, December 2009, pages 31–47; and Dermatologic Surgery, February 2006, pages 193–197). I am concerned about Derma E’s inclusion of natural fragrant oils. They don’t identify which oils they’re using, so the consumer is left in the dark about what they’re putting on their skin. Not only can the volatile components in many fragrant oils reduce skin’s ability to heal, but the designation of “natural fragrant oils” isn’t permitted by any cosmetic regulatory body in the world. One more comment: Scar Gel won’t have any positive effect on stretch marks or burns, either.

Poor L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Secret No. 1 Magic Perfecting Base ($13 for 0.5 ounce). Thanks to the blend of silicones and a spackle-like texture, this light pink primer does a very good job of filling in pores and fine lines, while adding a matte, soft-focus finish to skin. The trick to keeping this from balling up is to pat the product into skin, and only where you need it. Foundations of all types smooth on nicely over top, and those with oilier skin will appreciate that the absorbents in primer helps to control oil throughout the day. As well as this performs on the skin, the jar packaging poses noteworthy problems. Primarily, it's difficult to get the right amount product out of the small jar. Squeeze tube packaging would've made this a Paula's Pick.

PoorNeutrogena Rapid Clear 2-in-1 Fight & Fade Toner ($7.99 for 8 ounces). This BHA toner contains 2% salicylic acid as its active ingredient and has a pH that’s within range for exfoliation to occur. A well-formulate BHA (salicylic acid) product is a cornerstone of smart skin care when blemishes are a concern, and ongoing exfoliation will help fade marks left by past blemishes. However, the amount of alcohol in this toner is too great to ignore, and it is not recommended. Alcohol causes dryness, free-radical damage, and can increase oil production in the pore lining, potentially setting you up for oilier skin and more blemishes. Those looking for truly effective BHA products free from needless irritants should consider the options from Paula’s Choice.
