New, Higher-Strength Differin Those struggling with prescription treatment options to manage acne may have tried Differin (Adapalene) at some point. This synthetic retinoid, which some find more tolerable than tretinoin (Retin-A), was previously available at only a single concentration of 0.1%. The FDA approved a stronger, 0.3%, version of this drug and it has been available for prescribing since July (Source: www.happi.com). The new, higher-strength Differin is indicated for use by those battling moderate to severe acne. It is conceivable that the incidence and potential severity of side effects may increase with this stronger dose—but preapproval research has shown it to be more effective than the 0.1% concentration for keeping acne-prone skin clear, while measuring about the same level of side effects (Sources: Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, February 2006, pages 242–250; and Cutis, August 2005, pages 145–151). For more information about Differin, consult your dermatologist or pharmacist. MAKE UP FOR EVER Duo Mat Powder Foundation ($32) provides everything a pressed-powder foundation should, and excels in each area. The talc- and silicone-based formula feels buttery smooth and blends on like a second skin. The slightly dry, non-chalky matte finish is ideal for normal to very oily skin, and this provides light to medium coverage that doesn’t mask skin but does make it look refined and polished. The selection of 11 shades is first-rate, with the only questionable colors being the slightly orange 209 Warm Beige and the slightly peach 214 Dark Beige. Shades 216 Caramel and 218 Chocolate are beautiful for darker skin tones or used as matte bronzing powders. Shade 200 Beige Opalescent has a soft shine that will magnify oily areas. This powder foundation does contain fragrance. Find it!
Dear Paula, A great hint for sharpening pencils is to put them in the freezer for ten minutes before you sharpen them, which helps prevent breakage. Lucille, via e-mail Dear Lucille, It is great to put pencils in the freezer before sharpening to prevent breakage, but no one ever remembers to do that, and sometimes they break anyway, especially if you leave the pencil in the fridge too long. That is why I prefer lining with eyeshadow powders, either wet or dry: no freezing, sharpening, or breakage ever.
