BEST
$$$ Urban Decay Razor Sharp Ultra Definition Finishing Powder ($30). The concept of this loose powder is to provide a “stunning, soft-focus effect, even under bright and unforgiving light”. It does that and more thanks to its super-fine texture and translucent color. This powder has an unusually slippery texture yet it adheres well to skin and leaves a soft, non-powdery matte finish that feels weightless yet makes skin look smooth and polished. I tested this under the bright lights at Sephora and in natural daylight (on a sunny day) and the result was impressive. This works beautifully over foundation though the sole shade won’t work for everyone. It’s best for fair to medium skin tones. Whether you apply this with a powder brush (sheer results) or buff it on with the built-in sponge applicator (which provides greater coverage without looking cakey), this powder exemplifies the concept of high definition makeup.
WORST
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock, SPF 100 ($11.99 for 5 ounces). This spray-on sunscreen provides sufficient UVA protection with stabilized avobenzone, but the base formula is almost 50% alcohol. The alcohol allows this to dry quickly, but it also causes irritation and free-radical damage, so the trade-off isn’t worth it. Add to that the sensitizing potential of the high amount of active ingredients needed to achieve SPF 100 (a sunscreen rating that’s overkill because there isn’t that much daylight anywhere in the world) and this is a sunscreen to leave at the store.
