BEST
Eucerin Aquaphor Lip Therapy ($4.29 for 0.35 ounce). Aquaphor Lip Therapy is a very good, suitably emollient lip balm that comes in a squeeze tube. The fragrance-free formula is gentle and does an excellent job taking care of dry, chapped lips.
Eucerin included a small but potentially effective amount of antioxidants, an anti-irritant, and a cell-communicating ingredient, all of which can contribute toward making your lips healthier. Formula- and cost-wise, this is a great, portable lip balm to consider!
WORST
Perricone MD Cosmeceuticals Super Supermodel Legs Chili Pepper Capsaicin ($30 for 2 ounces). This tinted body moisturizer, which for some reason is supposed to be special for the legs (what’s next, ankle creams and shin-softening balms?) contains a frustrating blend of helpful and problematic ingredients. Essentially, the good ingredients exert their energies defending your skin from the irritant potential the bad ingredients have, which means you’re not getting much benefit for your money.
The pepper extract (listed as Capsicum frutescens) is a potent irritant even in small amounts, and the second ingredient (urea) is present in an amount high enough to exfoliate skin. The manner in which urea works temporarily compromises skin’s barrier function, which means the irritating ingredients in this leg moisturizer can penetrate further, causing more problems deeper in your skin.
None of this is good news because the irritation can cause collagen breakdown and impair your skin’s ability to heal and reach its healthiest state.
