BEST
Pantene Curl Defining Spray Gel, Extra Strong Hold ($4.99 for 6.5 ounces). This is a very good, alcohol-free spray gel that provides light, flexible hold for all hair types except very thick or coarse. It contains an impressive blend of conditioning agents that puts it a step above many other spray gels sold at the drugstore. This also works beautifully when sprayed on dry curls to help shape and smooth them. Have thick or coarse hair that’s also curly? Try Pantene’s Curls Anti-Frizz Creme ($4.99 for 3.5 ounces).
WORST
Green Cream Level 3 ($36 for 1 ounce) is designed for sensitive skin types, this lightweight gel with retinol is a problem whether skin is markedly sensitive or not. That’s because it contains alcohol (listed as ethanol) as the second ingredient. The alcohol may help the retinol penetrate skin better, but there are other ingredients that can do this without causing extraneous irritation, dryness, and free radical damage.
Green Cream Level 6 ($43 for 1 ounce)is a gel with retinol is designed to “appeal to the broadest audience” but its formula is far form applause-worthy. It is inferior to many other products with retinol because it contains alcohol as the second ingredient. The alcohol may help the retinol penetrate skin better, but there are other ingredients that can do this without causing extraneous irritation, dryness, and free radical damage. Besides, the amount of retinol in this product, while impressive, can be found in better formulations from Skinceuticals, Dr. Denese New York, and Serious Skin Care. Lastly,
Green Cream Level 9 ($50 for 1 ounce) is virtually identical to Green Cream Level 6. As such, the same review applies. The amount of retinol in this product, while impressive, can be found in better formulations from other brands. There is no substantiated research proving the amount of retinol in this product (likely 1% or slightly less) is an “excellent alternative to a prescription strength retinoid”.
